Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c.1525-1569)

Pieter Brueghel the Elder was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker. He specialized in genre paintings with peasants, often with a large landscape element, but also painted religious works.

Despite the prevalence of landscape and genre painting there are still some works which can be considerd historical. But als o here dominate Flemish landscape and clothing, and if we are watching the ignorant farmer ignoring the death of Icarus, we may conclude that there is also Flemish spirit.

The Massacre of the Innocents (c. 1565-1567) doesn't happen somewhere in the Orient, it's a cruel war scenery from the religious wars in the Netherlands.
